FAMILY CATECHIN & PROCYANIDIN

The catechin reference materials are derived from the flavan-3-ol structure, as two mains naturally occurring backbones are (+)-catechin and (-)-epicatechin. They are plant secondary metabolites with antioxidant activity and health benefits, as protection of the brain after an ischemic stroke. In vitro, they have enzyme inhibitor properties, like monoamine oxidase inhibition and could be used in the treatment of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s patients. Procyanidins, which are oligomers of catechin and epicatechin, have antioxidant property in vitro, and some human studies pointed out their anti-inflammatory activity.
